GAIL to set up wind power project in Maharashtra, investing Rs 1,736 crore
GAIL (India) Limited will develop a 178.2 MW wind power project in Maharashtra at a cost of ₹1,736 crore. This investment is part of the company's strategy to expand renewable energy capacity and achieve its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2035.

The country's state-owned gas company, GAIL (India) Limited, has decided to invest in a large wind power project in Maharashtra.
The company will spend ₹1,736.25 crore on the project. This move aims to increase renewable energy capacity and achieve the goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2035.
178.2 MW of new wind power capacity
The company stated in a regulatory filing that its board meeting on Friday approved a proposal to install 178.2 MW of wind power capacity.
The project will be completed within 24 months of contract award. Upon commissioning, it will significantly expand GAIL's existing renewable energy capacity.
Renewable portfolio continues to strengthen
The company currently has a renewable energy capacity of 117.95 MW. Additionally, solar projects totaling 27 MW are operating in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
GAIL's wind power projects are already operational in Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, gradually strengthening its presence in the clean energy sector.
Net-zero target by 2035
GAIL has set a target of zeroing out Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 2035, while reducing Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
The company is working towards increasing its total renewable energy capacity to 3.4 gigawatts by 2035. This strategy is considered consistent with India's energy transition and climate goals.
Increasing investment in green energy
In addition to wind and solar power, GAIL is also investing in clean energy projects such as green hydrogen and compressed biogas (CBG). Experts believe that energy companies are increasingly focusing on green energy alongside traditional fuels.
GAIL is India's largest natural gas transmission and marketing company, with a nationwide gas pipeline network spanning approximately 18,000 kilometers. The company also plays an active role in LPG marketing and the petrochemical business.
