The Indian government is taking a major step to accelerate chip manufacturing in the country. It plans to launch a new fund of approximately ₹1 lakh crore (approximately $10.8 billion) with the aim of making India a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.

According to sources, this fund could be launched in the next two to three months. This fund will subsidize projects related to chip design, manufacturing equipment, and the supply chain. However, this plan is currently under discussion and subject to change.

Government's focus on chip industry

The semiconductor industry in India is still in its infancy, but the government wants to rapidly advance it. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is working to make the country a major hub for electronics manufacturing.

The demand for chips is growing rapidly worldwide. Semiconductors have become essential for artificial intelligence, smartphones, cars, electronic devices, and other technology products. This is why many countries are making significant investments to strengthen their chip industries.

The plan has already begun

The Indian government launched an incentive scheme worth approximately $10 billion in 2021. Under this scheme, the government was willing to cover approximately half the cost of setting up chip manufacturing projects.

Following this initiative, several major companies have announced investments in India.

For example, Micron Technology is building a chip assembly unit in Gujarat. Tata Group is also developing a semiconductor fabrication plant and packaging unit in Gujarat.

Attempting to attract global companies

India's strategy is to attract global tech companies to invest. Just as Apple Inc. has expanded iPhone assembly in India, the government wants chip companies to also start production in India.

The government aims to gradually advance India's manufacturing footprint towards advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the coming years.

The government hopes that by 2032, India will be able to achieve chip manufacturing capabilities comparable to major countries in the world.
